The Metropori of Growth
From a communications concept to a core pillar of the city strategy
We created the Metropori of Growth concept for Pori, bringing together political decision-makers, the business community, and residents around a shared goal: growth for Pori. The concept quickly became the city’s collective story of the future and ultimately the headline of the entire city strategy.
Client
The City of Pori had made a growth commitment – a rare, shared decision across political lines to turn the city toward growth and to stand firmly behind that direction.
This commitment was more than a single resolution. It was built on a diverse and ambitious set of initiatives: from everyday spatial and infrastructure solutions to industrial investments measured in billions.
What the city needed was a way to bring this complexity together — to tell a clear, convincing story of where Pori was heading and why growth was not just possible, but inevitable.
Challenger
Porin tulevaisuuskuva oli vuosia ollut alavireinen. Asukasluku laski, työpaikkoja katosi ja nuorten pitovoima oli heikko. Kaupunki tarvitsi viestinnällisen peruskiven, joka palauttaa uskon kasvuun ja kannustaa tekoihin – niin kaupunkilaisilta, yrityksiltä kuin poliittisilta toimijoiltakin.
Konseptin täytyi olla tosi, helposti omaksuttava ja yhtä aikaa sekä ylätason tarina että arkisen tekemisen tuki. Oleellisinta oli saada yhteinen “Kyllä me tähän pystymme, koska ollaan kuitenkin porilaisia”-henki päälle.

Solution
For years, the outlook for Pori’s future had been subdued. The population was declining, jobs were disappearing, and the city struggled to retain young people. Pori needed a strong communicative foundation — something that would restore faith in growth and spark action across the board: among citizens, businesses, and political decision-makers alike.
The concept had to be grounded in reality, easy to grasp, and capable of operating on two levels at once: as a high‑level narrative for the future and as practical support for everyday action. Above all, it needed to ignite a shared sense of confidence — the feeling of “we can do this, because we’re Pori”.




Results
The Metropori of Growth quickly grew beyond a single communications concept. It was widely embraced across the city organization and partner network, and it now serves as the headline of Pori’s entire city strategy. The concept is used in investment communications, strategic messaging, leadership communications, and marketing materials. It has taken many forms — from podcasts and seminar series to a strong presence at SuomiAreena.
The Metropori of Growth made visible what already existed in Pori — and helped the city tell its story in a way that invites others to join its journey of growth.
